Patient History For Cytogenetics (Chromosome) Studies

Mnemonic: CHR ST

Methodology: Giemsa-Band Analysis
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: 7-14 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Thaw media prior to tissue inoculation (DO NOT FREEZE THE SPECIMEN). Solid tumor biopsy: Place in a sterile, screw-top container filled with tissue culture transport medium (cytogenetics tissue media, ARUP Supply # 32788) at 20-25°C. Do not place tissue in formalin.

Storage/Transport Temperature: 10 mm biopsy in a sterile, screw-top container filled with tissue culture transport medium at 20-25°C. (Min: 5 mm)

Remarks: If specimen size is too large for a normal collection tube, a larger sterile container can be used such as a sterile urine cup and can be flooded with several tubes of cytogenetic tissue media. If cytogenetics tissue media is not available, collect in plain RPMI, Hanks solution, saline, or ringers. This test must be ordered using Cytogenetic test request form 43097 or through your ARUP interface. Please submit the Patient History Form - Chromosome Studies with the electronic packing list. The form is available on ARUP's Web site, http://www.aruplab.com/home/consent_forms.jsp.

Unacceptable Conditions: Frozen specimens. Specimens preserved in formalin.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable
Reference Interval:
By report
Note: These studies involve culturing of living cells; therefore, turnaround times given represent average times which are subject to multiple variables. After specimen receipt, results are generally available in an average of 14 days.

A processing fee will be charged if this procedure is canceled at the client's request, after the test has been set up, or if the specimen integrity is inadequate to allow culture growth.
CPT Code(s): 88239 Tissue culture; 88264 Analyze 20-25 cells; 88291 Interpretation and report - Additional CPT code modifiers may be required for procedures performed to test for oncologic or inherited disorders.
