Bartonella DNA Detection by PCR : 0093057

Mnemonic: BART DNA

Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction
Performed: Tue, Fri
Reported: 1-5 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  One 7 mL plain red, serum separator tube, lavender (EDTA), or pink (K2EDTA). Also acceptable: CSF or biopsy tissue. Specimen source is required.

Transport:  1 mL serum, plasma, CSF, or tissue in a sterile container, frozen. (Min: 0.25 mL)

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.25 mL serum, plasma, CSF, or tissue in a sterile container, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks:  Separate serum or plasma from cells and freeze before transport.  Freeze biopsy tissue immediately.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Heparinized or hemolyzed specimens. Whole blood (refer to 0060762).

Stability:  Ambient: 8 hours (excludes tissues); Refrigerated: 3 days (excludes tissues); Frozen: 1 month
Reference Interval:
Negative - Bartonella species DNA not detected by PCR
Positive - Bartonella species DNA detected by PCR
Interpretive Data: A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Bartonella species DNA concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.
