Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 7 mL plain red. Also acceptable: green (sodium or lithium heparin).

Transport: 1 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.5 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. 

Remarks: Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP. 

Unacceptable Conditions: Specimens collected in separator tubes, EDTA, oxalate, or citrate anticoagulants.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 4 months

Reference Interval:
Epilepsy: 50-100 µg/mL
Mania: 50-125 µg/mL
Toxic: 151 µg/mL or greater
