Specimen Required: Collect: Plain red. Also acceptable: Green (sodium or lithium heparin).

Specimen Preparation: Separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.2 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions: Citrate, EDTA, or oxalate anticoagulants.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 2 months

Reference Interval:
0-5 months: 6.0-12.0 µg/mL
  Toxic: 20.1 µg/mL or greater 

6 months and older: 10.0-20.0 µg/mL
  Toxic: 25.1 µg/mL or greater 
Note: Not recommended for treatment of neonatal apnea.
