Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 5 mL plain red. Also acceptable: lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), green (sodium heparin), gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate).

Transport: 1 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.6 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.6 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C.

Remarks: Separate serum or plasma from cells and refrigerate ASAP. Avoid use of separator tubes and gels.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 1 month; Refrigerated: 6 weeks; Frozen: 6 months

Therapeutic Range: Not well established.

Interpretive Data:
The proposed therapeutic range for seizure control is 3-14 µg/mL.  Concentrations that exceed 15 µg/mL may contribute to adverse effects.  Pharmacokinetics varies widely, particularly with co-medications and/or compromised renal function.
