Specimen Required: Collect:  One 7 mL plain red.  Also acceptable: lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), green (sodium heparin), gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate).

Transport:  3 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.  Sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate whole blood may be transported in the original container. 

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.3 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C.

Remarks:  Separate serum or plasma from cells within two hours of collection and transfer to a tightly-capped tube to minimize alcohol loss. For medical purposes only. Do not freeze whole blood.

Stability:  After separation from cells: Ambient: 1 week, if tightly capped; Refrigerated: 2 weeks, if tightly capped; Frozen: 1 month, except whole blood
