Specimen Required: Collect:  One 5 mL plain red. Also acceptable: lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), green (sodium heparin), gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate).

Transport:  1.5 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Remarks:  Avoid use of separator tubes and gels.

Stability:  After separation from cells: Ambient: 5 weeks; Refrigerated: 6 weeks; Frozen: 2 months

Therapeutic Range: not well established.
Interpretive Data: The proposed therapeutic range for seizure control is 2-10 µg/mL.  Concentrations that exceed 25 µg/mL may contribute to adverse effects.  Pharmacokinetics of gabapentin varies widely among patients, particularly those with compromised renal function.
