The concentrations of free and bioavailable testosterone are derived from mathematical expressions based on constants for the binding of testosterone to albumin and/or sex hormone binding globulin.

Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL SST or green (lithium heparin). Specimen should be collected between 6-10 a.m.

Transport: 2 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C.  (Min: 0.6 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.4 mL serum or plasma at 2-8°C.

Unacceptable Conditions: EDTA plasma.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 2 days; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 2 months

Bioavailable testosterone includes free plus weakly bound (non-SHBG bound) testosterone.  Bioavailable testosterone is an assessment of the biologically active testosterone in serum.
