Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL SST. Also acceptable: PST, lavender (EDTA), pink (K2EDTA), or green (sodium or lithium heparin).

Transport: 1 mL serum or plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.3 mL serum or plasma, frozen.

Remarks: Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature.  Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

Unacceptable Conditions: Grossly hemolyzed specimens.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 2 days; Frozen: 3 months

Reference Interval:
At birth, ferritin levels average 100 ng/mL and rise to a peak of about 350 ng/mL at one month. During the next five months, ferritin levels fall to about 30 ng/mL (Blood 43:581, 1974).
