0065080: Bordetella pertussis/parapertussis by PCR

Test Mnemonic: BORD PCR
Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction

Performed: Sun-Sat

Reported: 1-4 days

Specimen Required:
Collect: Respiratory specimens on rayon or Dacron® swab, or direct respiratory specimen such as BAL, respiratory aspirate, or sputum. Specimen source is required.

Transport: Swab in viral transport media (Microtest M4 or UTM) (ARUP supply #12884), or 2 mL respiratory specimen in sterile container, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions: Calcium-alginate swabs (shown to inhibit PCR).  Respiratory aspirates in collection containers with tubing.

Stability: Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated: 2 days; Frozen: 2 weeks

Reference Interval:

Test Number Components Reference Interval
0065078Bordetella pertussis by PCR  Negative - Bordetella pertussis bacterial DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive - Bordetella pertussis bacterial DNA detected by PCR.
Bordetella parapertussis by PCR Negative - Bordetella parapertussis bacterial DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive - Bordetella parapertussis bacterial DNA detected by PCR.

Interpretive Data:
A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or B. pertussis or B. parapertussis DNA in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.  A false positive for B. pertussis may occur in samples containing B. holmesii DNA. A false positive for B. parapertussis may occur in samples containing B. bronchiseptica DNA.

Please refer to Statement A in the Compliance Statements section in the front of the Laboratory Test Directory.
