0060715: Chlamydia pneumoniae by PCR

Test Mnemonic: CPNEUMOPCR
Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction

Performed: Mon, Wed, Fri

Reported: 1-5 days

Specimen Required:
Collect: Respiratory specimen: nasal wash, nasopharyngeal swab, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), pleural fluid.  Specimen source is required.

Transport: 2 mL respiratory specimen in sterile container or in viral transport media (Microtest M4 or UTM) (ARUP supply #12884), frozen. Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 1 mL respiratory specimen in sterile container or in viral transport media (Microtest M4 or UTM) (ARUP supply #12884), frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions: Dry swabs and leaking or nonsterile containers. Respiratory aspirates in collection containers with tubing (sample tends to leak from these containers, compromising the specimen).

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: 1 month

Reference Interval:
Negative - Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA not detected by PCR
Positive - Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA detected by PCR

Interpretive Data:
A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Chlamydia pneumoniae DNA concentrations below the level of detection by the assay.

This test is performed pursuant to an agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.
