Specimen Required: Collect: Respiratory specimen: Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).nasopharyngeal aspirate, swab, or washing, or tracheal aspirate.

Specimen Preparation: Do not freeze.
Fluid:
Transfer specimen to a sterile container. Also acceptable: Transfer to viral transport media (ARUP Supply #12884). Available online through eSupply using ARUP Connect™ or contact ARUP Client Services at (800) 522-2787.
Swab
: Place in viral transport media.
Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.


Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Remarks: Specimen source preferred.

Unacceptable Conditions: Dry swabs.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 72 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Note: Viral Culture (0065008) of DFA-negative specimens is strongly recommended.  Refer to Respiratory Viruses DFA with Reflex to Viral Culture (0060281). The sensitivity of DFA testing for RSV is greater than 95% and does not require culture backup.
