Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction

Specimen Required: Collect:  Pure culture of Staphylococcus aureus or coagulase-negative Staphylococcus on an agar slant.  Indicate isolate identification and specimen source.

Transport:  Organism in pure culture in a sealed container at 20-25°C.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Pediatric Collection/Transport:  

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonviable organisms or mixed cultures.

Stability:  Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: Unacceptable
Reference Interval:
Presence or absence (of mecA gene).
Interpretive Data: Presence of mecA gene indicates resistance to methicillin/oxacillin and all other beta-lactam antibiotics.
