Anaerobic Organism Identification with Reflex to Susceptibility : 0060198

Mnemonic: MC ANAIS

Methodology: Standard reference procedures for anaerobic identification and/or 16s rDNA sequencing for select bacterial isolates and susceptibility tests.
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: Varies
Specimen Required: Collect:  Actively growing organism, in pure culture, on agar slant or in anaerobic transport pouch or swab in anaerobic transport media.  Source of specimen is required.

Transport:  Sealed container at 20-25°C.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks:  Indicate source of organism and any other pertinent information.  The selection and extent of tests used for identification vary according to the source and type of bacteria suspected.  Susceptibility testing will not be performed if inappropriate for source and/or organism.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonviable organisms or leaking containers.

Stability:  Ambient: 3 days; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable
Reference Interval:
Complete identification, with susceptibility, of clinically significant isolates.
Interpretive Data: Susceptibility are billed as separate tests.
Note: If a significant organism is identified, then the appropriate susceptibility panel will be added.

Anaerobe susceptibility testing is appropriate in the case of serious infections involving: blood, bone, joint, tissue, or brain abscess.  (Refer to Antimicrobial Susceptibility - Anaerobe (0060202)).

Identification of referred isolates is performed and billed by the extent of tests required for identification.  Susceptibility testing is billed separately.  An additional handling fee will be billed for all mixed cultures as indicated in the specimen requirements.

For identification by 16s rDNA sequencing only, order Organism Identification by 16s rDNA Sequencing  (0060720).
CPT Code(s): 87076 and/or 87158; CPT codes for identification and susceptibility tests vary based upon method.
