Specimen Required:  
Collect: Viable mould organism in pure culture on nonblood-containing fungal medium slant.

Transport: Viable mould organism in pure culture in a sealed container at 20-25°C.

Submit specimen according to Infectious Substance, Category A, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:

Submit specimen according to Infectious Substance, Category A, shipping guidelines.

Remarks: Indicate source of organism.

Unacceptable Conditions: Nonviable organisms, mixed cultures, leaking containers, organisms submitted on an agar plate.

Stability: Ambient: 1 month; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: Unacceptable

Reference Interval:
Complete identification of clinically significant mould isolates.

Note:
An additional handling charge will be billed for all organisms submitted for identification that are not in pure culture as indicated in the specimen requirements.

If Histoplasma, Coccidioides, or Blastomyces is the presumptive diagnosis, a DNA probe will be added for confirmation at an additional charge. This result will be reported as Histoplasma capsulatum Identification by DNA Probe (0062226), Coccidioides immitis Identification by DNA Probe (0062225), and Blastomyces dermatitidis Identification by DNA Probe (0062224) and an additional charge per probe will be billed.

Organisms submitted for identification are kept for 7 days; if organisms fail to grow, the client will be contacted. All original submissions are held until the identification is completed or the test is cancelled.
