Parvovirus B 19, by PCR : 0060043

Mnemonic: PARVPCR

Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction
Performed: Mon, Wed, Fri
Reported: 1-4 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  One 7 mL plain red, CSF, bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), ocular fluid, amniotic fluid, tissue (freeze tissue immediately), vesicle fluid, one 7 mL plain red or serum separator tube (serum), or one 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA). Spin blood specimen and remove serum or plasma before transporting. Specimen source is required.

Transport:  1 mL serum, plasma, or amniotic or synovial fluid in a sterile container, frozen.  Fresh tissue, snap frozen, on dry ice.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.25 mL serum, plasma, or synovial fluid.  Less volume may decrease sensitivity of assay. Transport as above.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks:  Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue can be submitted, but is not an optimal sample. Transport at 20-25°C.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonsterile or leaking containers. Heparinized or hemolyzed samples.  Frozen whole blood.  Tissues only in formalin or other preservatives.  Bone marrow.  For bone marrow samples, refer to Parvovirus B-19, by PCR, Bone Marrow (0060028).

Stability:  Ambient: 8 hours (excludes tissue); Refrigerated: 3 days (excludes tissue); Frozen: 6 months
Reference Interval:
Negative - Parvovirus B19 DNA not detected by PCR.
Positive - Parvovirus B19 DNA detected by PCR.
Interpretive Data: A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or Parvovirus DNA in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.

Please refer to Statement B in the Compliance Statements section in the front of the Laboratory Test Directory.
