Treponema pallidum (Rapid Plasma Reagin) with Reflex to Titer, FTA-ABS & TP-PA : 0050011

Mnemonic: RPR FTA

Methodology: Semi-Quantitative Charcoal Agglutination/Semi-Quantitative Indirect Fluorescent Antibody/Semi-Quantitative Particle Agglutination (PA)
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: 1-4 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Serum separator tube.

Specimen Preparation: Separate serum from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Unacceptable Conditions: CSF or plasma. Contaminated, hemolyzed, or severely lipemic specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year
Reference Interval:

Test Number Components Reference Interval
Treponema pallidum (RPR) RPR (+) = Reactive
RPR (weak +) = Weakly reactive
RPR (-) = Nonreactive
Treponema pallidum (RPR) Titer < 1:1
0050477Treponema pallidum Antibody (FTA-ABS), Serum, IgG by IFA with Reflex to Treponema pallidum Antibody by TP-PA Nonreactive
0050777Treponema pallidum Antibody by TP-PA Nonreactive

Note: This panel is for clients in states where automatic confirmation using a treponemal test is required for all reactive RPR tests.

If RPR is weakly reactive or reactive, then a titer to endpoint and FTA-ABS confirmation will be added. If FTA-ABS is inconclusive, TP-PA will be added.  Additional charges apply.
CPT Code(s): 86592 RPR; if reflexed, add 86593 RPR titer; 86780 FTA; if reflexed add TP-PA 86780
