Myoglobin, Urine : 0020223

Mnemonic: MYOG-U

Methodology: Electrochemiluminescent Immunoassay
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: Within 24 hours
Specimen Required: Collect:  Random or 24-hour urine (refrigerate during collection).  Adjust pH to 8-9 immediately after collection.

Transport:  1 mL aliquot from a random or 24-hour collection at 2-8°C.  (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  1 mL aliquot from a random or 24-hour collection at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.2 mL)

Remarks:  Mix random or 24-hour collection well and adjust pH to 8-9 by adding 10% Na2CO3 (Myoglobin is unstable in urine, unless the pH is 8.0-9.0.) Record total volume and collection time interval on transport tube and test request form.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Urine specimens without time and volume indicated.

Stability:  pH 8-9: Ambient: 1 hour; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: 1 month
Reference Interval:
0-1 mg/L
Interpretive Data: Patients with urine myoglobin greater than 15 mg/L are at risk of acute renal failure. Usual results are less than 1 mg/L. Results between 1 and 15 mg/L are associated with vigorous exercise, myocardial infarct, mild muscle injury, and other conditions.
