Specimen Required: Collect:  One 4 mL serum separator tube.

Transport:  1 mL serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.5 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.2 mL serum at 2-8°C.

Remarks:  Separate serum from cells ASAP.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Plasma.  Specimens containing particulate material.

Stability:  After separation from cells: Ambient: up to 1 week is acceptable, but not preferred; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: Indefinitely (avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles)
Reference Interval:
4 IU/L or less = Negative
5-11 IU/L = Indeterminate
12-1,000 IU/L = Positive
Interpretive Data: Result greater than or equal to 10 IU/L implies immunity.  For post-hepatitis B vaccine antibody testing guidelines for the general public, refer to MMWR 1990;39(S2):1-23;  and for health care workers refer to MMWR 1997;46 (No. RR-18).
Note: Results greater than 1,000 IU/L are reported as 1,000 IU/L.
