0020047: Glucose Screen, Pregnancy

Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate) at 60 minutes post-glucose load.

Transport: 1 mL plasma at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.2 mL)

Remarks: Separate plasma from cells and refrigerate within 30 minutes.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 year

Reference Interval:
Values > 140 mg/dL constitute a positive screen.  Positive screens on pregnant patients should be followed by a diagnostic three-hour oral glucose tolerance test (Glucose Tolerance Test, Pregnancy 0020543).

Note:
Administer a 50 g glucose load with 450 mL water. For the screen, the patient does not need to be fasting.  The patient should remain inactive and receive nothing by mouth (including tobacco) during test period.  A small sip of water or ice is permissible.  Reasons for invalid results include emesis and conditions which delay stomach emptying.
