Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL gray (sodium fluoride/potassium oxalate), PST, or SST.

Transport: 1 mL plasma or serum at 2-8°C. (Min: 0.2 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.2 mL plasma or serum at 2-8°C.

Remarks: Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 year

Interpretive Data:
A normal fasting glucose concentration is less than 100 mg/dL.  An impaired fasting glucose concentration is 100-125 mg/dL.  A provisional diagnosis of diabetes mellitus can be made when a fasting glucose concentration is greater than 125 mg/dL.
