Sarah Teofilo, ARUP chief information officer, accepted a Women Tech Award for her impact in healthcare technology.
ARUP Laboratories’ chief information officer, Sarah Teofilo, was named a Women Tech Award honoree in recognition of her leadership, innovation, and impact in healthcare technology. Teofilo was one of 43 women recognized for their contributions across industries ranging from aerospace to healthcare.
Honorees were invited to speak for a few minutes as part of a lightning round of learning, and Teofilo reflected on the personal experiences that sparked her passion for healthcare technology.
Early in her career, she worked on a DNA sequencing project focused on inherited diseases and cancer mutations. At the same time, she was caring for a young infant and supporting her father through cancer treatment. This experience reinforced a lesson that still guides her leadership today: Behind every specimen, system, and technological innovation is a person waiting for answers.
“I learned firsthand that the results produced in the laboratory are more than data points. They may represent the very best or the very worst news of a patient’s life,” Teofilo shared.
That perspective continues to shape her leadership philosophy. Teofilo believes technology creates the greatest impact when it helps people work together to improve lives and solve meaningful problems.
“We can’t lose sight of the humanity behind the technology,” she said. “For me, that means staying focused on the human outcome first and then working to bring measurable and visible value without sacrificing privacy, security, and reliability.”
Under her leadership, ARUP’s Information Technology (IT) department reorganized around business value streams, strengthened planning and governance, advanced enterprise architecture and information security, and modernized critical platforms that enable operations.
Teofilo has also championed automation and artificial intelligence initiatives that have returned thousands of hours to ARUP and resulted in millions of dollars in savings. Through strategic leadership and a focus on people, Teofilo continues to build technology capabilities that support ARUP’s growth and innovation while keeping patients at the center of every decision.
