Executive engagement: ARUP’s CEO and executive team are actively involved in efforts to champion, develop, and support our diverse workforce and create a culture built on trust, teamwork, and respect.

Leadership initiatives: ARUP has women in technical leadership positions at all levels of the company, including the executive team.

Community investment: ARUP employees are actively involved in SheTech, BioHive Women in Technology and Science Community (WITS), and other community groups to create opportunities for engagement.

Internal programs: ARUP’s mentorship and returnship programs and employee engagement groups build community and help develop careers.

ARUP Laboratories has been named to the Women Tech Council’s (WTC) 2025 Shatter List. The list scores companies on four factors that help women break the glass ceiling in technology: executive engagement, leadership initiatives, community investment, and formal internal programs. According to the WTC, a Shatter List ranking indicates a strong organizational commitment and active programming to create impact for women in tech.

ARUP is committed to building up the entire workforce, said Sarah Teofilo, ARUP’s chief information officer. “ARUP cultivates an environment for individuals to continuously improve, develop expertise, and share knowledge,” said Teofilo. “Helping all members of our workforce succeed ultimately helps us deliver on our mission to improve patient care.”

Teofilo said ARUP has a robust mentorship program that provides opportunities for all employees to connect in a mentor and mentee relationship. Partners from Human Resources thoughtfully match the mentorship pairs according to each individual’s strengths, skills, and desired outcomes to ensure participants reach their goals for the year-long program and beyond. Outcomes include advancements into new positions within ARUP, new relationships built across departments, and employee retention.

ARUP also offers employee engagement groups (EEG), including the Women at Work EEG, to develop community, advance careers, and share opportunities for training and development. The company’s returnship program is a pathway for experienced professionals, who have paused their careers for at least a year, to reengage in the workforce on a short-term basis. Many so-called returners are so valuable that they become full-time employees.

Teofilo said ARUP is continually thinking about the next generation of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) superstars and participates in SheTech, a program to activate, engage, and inspire high school students to pursue STEM careers. Additionally, ARUP and the University of Utah’s Division of Medical Laboratory Sciences will unveil a new Advanced Practice Clinical Laboratory Training Center this summer to train students in medical laboratory sciences and address a critical need for laboratory professionals nationwide.

Teofilo explained that the company’s core values, as distilled by the Five Pillars of ARUP Culture, include creating a good working environment and doing the right thing. She said these principles help us build a culture of trust, respect, and teamwork.

“I’m proud of ARUP for receiving this recognition. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the mentors I’ve had who embraced the culture and helped me succeed,” Teofilo said. “ARUP is a great place for people to contribute, grow, and invest in long-term, rewarding careers.”
