When a lone star tick bites a person, it can transfer alpha-gal into the person’s bloodstream, leading to the development of anti-alpha-gal antibodies. These antibodies can trigger an allergic reaction to red meat, or according to a new study, a reaction to a blood transfusion in some patients.
