Zachary Zaret

Expertise in finance may not be the first skill one associates with laboratorians, but as ARUP Healthcare Advisory Services Senior Healthcare Consultant Zachary Zaret can attest, finance does not exist in a vacuum separate from patient care. As a microbiologist with more than 15 years of laboratory and leadership experience, and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from The Ohio State University (OSU), Zach brings a unique perspective to the industry. While working in the OSU Medical Center laboratory, he began studying healthcare finance, developing a distinct approach to cost accounting. After serving as specimen processing supervisor at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU), he was selected to become manager of laboratory finance. Zach joined ARUP in January 2022, where, as a senior healthcare consultant, he applies his multidisciplinary background to help clients understand how money flows through laboratory operations. “I like to think I’m a generalist on the team,” Zach said. "But I’m probably mostly ‘the finance guy.’” Based in Tucson, he spends his spare time hiking in the desert and hills of Southern Arizona with his partner, baking rye sourdough bread, and supporting local water conservation and stewardship efforts.
