A Message From the CEO
At ARUP Laboratories, innovation has never been about technology for technology’s sake. It has always been about applying deep expertise, scientific rigor, and thoughtful governance to solve real problems for patients, clinicians, and the laboratories that serve them.

This issue of Magnify highlights how that philosophy is guiding our work in applied artificial intelligence (AI). Across ARUP, interdisciplinary teams are leveraging advanced AI and bioinformatics tools to tackle some of the most complex challenges in diagnostic medicine, from improving the accuracy and consistency of rare disease diagnosis to streamlining laboratory workflows so that results reach patients faster without compromising quality or safety.
What stands out is not just the sophistication of the models, but the discipline behind their development, which is demonstrated by rigorous validation, human oversight, and a relentless focus on clinical value. As you’ll read, applied AI at ARUP is expanding what’s possible while keeping people firmly in the loop.
This issue also introduces leaders and advisors whose work exemplifies ARUP’s commitment to thoughtful growth and stewardship:
- Adam Barker, PhD, is the new president of ARUP’s Reference Business Unit. His journey from bench scientist to executive leader has shaped a people‑first approach grounded in scientific curiosity, operational excellence, and long-term thinking. Today, Dr. Barker, who is also ARUP’s chief operations officer, oversees the core of ARUP’s testing operations, guiding innovation, automation, and capacity in ways that support both our mission and our people.
- David Shiembob, MBA, C(ASCP)CM, is the manager of ARUP Healthcare Advisory Services. In this issue, he explains how laboratories are often undervalued within health systems and why understanding the true financial and operational value of the lab is critical before major decisions are made. His work helps clients move beyond surface-level cost assumptions to see laboratories as strategic assets and growth engines.
Together, these stories and others in this edition of Magnify reflect what makes ARUP different: innovation grounded in expertise, leadership shaped by purpose, and a steadfast commitment to advancing patient care. Thanks for reading.
