INACTIVATION of Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (RIBA) and Associated Tests

ARUP Laboratories was notified in February 2011 of a nationwide backorder of the reagent for Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Antibody (RIBA), Supplemental (ARUP test code 0020104). The vendor has provided no plan for resolution of the backorder in the near future.

The following tests are inactivated April 4, 2011, due to the reagent backorder:

  • Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (RIBA), Supplemental (ARUP test code 0020104)
  • Hepatitis C Virus Antibody with Reflex to Supplemental RIBA (ARUP test code 0020700)
  • Hepatitis C Virus RNA Quantitative bDNA with Reflex to Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (RIBA), Supplemental (ARUP test code 2002683)
  • Hepatitis C Virus Antibody RNA Qualitative PCR with Reflex to Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (RIBA), Supplemental (ARUP test code 2002684)
  • Hepatitis C Virus Antibody RNA Quantitative by Real-Time PCR with Reflex to Hepatitis C Virus Antibody (RIBA), Supplemental (ARUP test code 2002686)

RECOMMENDATIONS for follow-up testing

For follow-up to a low positive Hepatitis C Virus Antibody by CIA (Chemiluminescent Immunoassay) and in lieu of the inactivated HCV RIBA, ARUP offers two options:

Hepatitis C Virus RNA Quantitative, Real-Time PCR (ARUP test code 0098268). This assay has a lower limit of detection of 18 IU/mL and a limit of quantitation of 43 IU/mL. Please note that due to stringent specimen integrity requirements for testing by PCR, this test may not be performed on a specimen previously submitted for antibody testing.

Hepatitis C Virus RNA Qualitative by PCR (ARUP test code 0098264). This assay has a lower limit of detection of 50 IU/mL.
