Respiratory Viruses Rapid Culture : 2001504

Methodology: Cell Culture/Immunofluorescence

Reported: 2-6 days
Specimen Required: Collect: Nasopharyngeal aspirate/swab/washing, tracheal aspirate, or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL). Source of specimen is preferred.

Storage/Transport Temperature: Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), nasopharyngeal washing/aspirate, or tracheal aspirate in sterile, leak-proof container or in viral transport media at 2-8°C (ARUP Supply # 12884) (Min: 1 mL). Nasopharyngeal swab, in viral transport media at 2-8°C. (Min: 1 mL) Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Remarks: Do not freeze.

Unacceptable Conditions: Dry swabs, wood swabs, and calcium alginate swabs.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 1 hour; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable
Reference Interval:
Culture negative for respiratory viruses.
Interpretive Data: The respiratory viruses that can be isolated include: influenza A & B; parainfluenza types 1, 2, 3; adenovirus; and RSV. Other viruses (such as HSV or CMV) will not be routinely detected in this culture. This test has decreased sensitivity for detection of adenovirus.
