Specimen Required: Collect:  One 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or one 5 mL serum separator tube (spin blood samples and remove serum or plasma before transporting), CSF, or urine. Specimen source is required.

Transport:  1 mL plasma, serum, CSF or urine, frozen. (Min: 0.25 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Pediatric Collection/Transport:  0.25 mL plasma, serum, CSF, or urine, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Unacceptable Conditions:  Heparinized specimens.

Stability:  Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: 30 days
Reference Interval:
Negative-  JC viral DNA not detected by PCR
Positive-  JC viral DNA detected by PCR
Interpretive Data: A negative result does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or JC viral DNA concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.
