Specimen Required: Collect: Plain red. Also acceptable: Lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation: Allow plain red tube to sit for 15-20 min at room temperature for proper clot formation. Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 2 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Frozen.

Remarks: Melatonin concentrations depend on age and on circadian rhythm, with maximum concentration at night between 1:00-3:00 a.m.

Unacceptable Conditions: Serum separator tube (SST). Hemolyzed or lipemic specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 3 months
