Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1, Activity : 0098781

Mnemonic: PAI-1

Methodology: Bioimmunoassay
Performed: Mon, Wed, Fri
Reported: 1-8 days
Specimen Required: Patient Prep: Collect specimen between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m.

Collect: Lt. blue (sodium citrate). Refer to Specimen Handling at aruplab.com for hemostasis/thrombosis specimen handling guidelines.

Specimen Preparation: Centrifuge plasma. Within 1 hour of draw, transfer 1.5 mL platelet-poor plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube and freeze. (Min: 1 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: CRITICAL FROZEN. Additional specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered.

Remarks:

Unacceptable Conditions: Serum. Hemolyzed specimens or specimens that have been thawed and refrozen.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 1 hour; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: 2 months
Reference Interval:
Less than or equal to 22.0 IU/mL
Interpretive Data: Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor 1(PAI-1) has diurnal variation, with higher concentration in the morning and decreased concentration in the afternoon.  PAI-1 is also an acute phase reactant.  The reference interval was established from fasting samples drawn between 8 am and 12 pm.

This assay was designed primarily to identify elevated PAI-1 concentrations, which are thought to be a thrombotic risk factor.  Concentrations below 2.0 IU/mL are not accurately quantified by this assay.  A test result of less than 2.0 IU/mL is not diagnostic of PAI-1 deficiency and may be seen in normal individuals.
CPT Code(s): 85415
