Search Tips

Wildcards Symbol (*)

The wildcard symbol (*) can be used in place of letters or characters in query words to search for different permutations of a word.

*	Can be in any position in the term and matches any number of characters.
Examples:	hemo*	matches hemolytic, hemophilia and hemophilia
	*NA	matches DNA and RNA
	*tet**	matches text and test
	BCL*	matches bcl-1/JH and bcl-2/JH
	virus*	matches virus or viruses
	*glucan*	matches beta-1,3-d-Glucan

Boolean Parameters

Search terms can be a single word or several words. The search engine automatically inserts and between words if nothing else is specified, so the Boolean term and can be omitted in search terms. For example, searching for tissue assay is the same as searching for tissue AND assay.

Quotes can be used to search for phrases. For example:

"tissue assay "

Words must be present in the specified order with no intervening words

The following boolean connectors can be used: AND, OR, NOT Examples:

tissue AND assay	Both words must be present
tissue OR assay	Either word can be present
assay NOT tissue	Only assay can be present, tissue cannot appear on the page

Specimen Required:	Collect: One 10 mL green (sodium heparin). Also acceptable: 3 mL non-diluted bone marrow aspirate collected in a heparinized syringe and transferred into a green (sodium heparin). Other sample types may be acceptable, contact the Cytogenetics Laboratory for specific specimen collection and transportation instructions. Transport: 10 mL whole blood or 3 mL bone marrow at 20-25°C. (Min: 5 mL whole blood or 1 mL bone marrow) Remarks: It is recommended that all FISH studies be done in conjunction with routine cytogenetic analysis. (Refer to appropriate Chromosome Analysis test for order instructions). If FISH only is requested, please include copy of previous cytogenetics report. If cell pellets or dropped cytogenetics slides are not submitted, a processing fee will apply. Unacceptable Conditions: Frozen, clotted, or paraffin-embedded specimens. Stability: Ambient: 48 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable

Note:	Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) is performed for specific abnormalities as follows: Translocation breakpoints in leukemia (e.g., t(9;22) or t(15;17)), clonal aneuploidy in leukemia Time of testing can vary depending on sample type and probes ordered. This test must be ordered using a Cytogenetic test request form 43099 or through your ARUP interface. Please submit the Cytogenetics and Chromosome Studies Information Form with the Electronic Packing List. The form is available on ARUP's Web site, http://www.aruplab.com/home/consent_forms.jsp. A processing fee will be charged if this procedure is canceled, at the client's request, after the test has been set up, or if the sample integrity is inadequate to allow culture growth. The fee will vary based on sample type.
