Specimen Required: Collect:  One 10 mL green (sodium heparin).

Transport:  3 mL plasma, frozen. (Min: 1 mL) Specimen must be protected from light.  Submit specimen in an ARUP Amber Transport Tube.

Remarks:  CRITICAL FROZEN. Patient needs to be fasting for 12-14 hours. Water may be taken as needed but no other fluids are allowed. Patient should abstain from alcohol for 24 hours prior to test. Patient should be off medications for at least one week prior to test. If clinically inappropriate to discontinue medications, please provide a list of medications with the specimen.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Separator tubes. Specimens not protected from light.

Interpretive Data: This profile begins extraction and quantitation of total porphyrins in plasma, if the results for the total is greater than 1.0 µg/dL, fractionation will be performed at an additional charge.
