Methodology: Ion Exchange Chromatography

Reported: 3-7 days
Specimen Required: Collect:  24-hour or other timed urine collections are also acceptable. Refrigerate 24-hour/timed specimens during collection.

Transport:  10 mL aliquot from a well-mixed random, 24-hour, or timed collection, frozen.  (Min: 3 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:  3 mL aliquot from a well-mixed random urine, frozen.

Remarks:  CRITICAL FROZEN.  As soon as possible after urine has been obtained, mix the collection well and freeze. Avoid dilute urine when possible. Clinical information is needed for appropriate interpretation.  Additional required information includes age, gender, diet (e.g., TPN therapy), drug therapy, and family history.  Biochemical Genetics Patient History Form is available on the ARUP Web site or by contacting ARUP Client Services.  Record total volume and collection time interval on transport tube and test request form.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Ambient or refrigerated specimens.

Reference Interval:
0-5 months: 62-345 µmol/g crt
6-11 months: 53-133 µmol/g crt
1-3 years: 53-186 µmol/g crt
4-12 years: 35-106 µmol/g crt
13 years and older: 27-151 µmol/g crt
Interpretive Data: For random or timed specimens other than 24 hours, the result represents the total milligrams of cystine excreted during the collection period.
Note: This test is indicated only to monitor patients with cystinuria on therapy.
