0080388: Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Whole Blood

Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL green (sodium or lithium heparin) or one 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2 EDTA).

Transport: 3 mL whole blood, frozen. (Min: 1 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Amber Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.7 mL whole blood, frozen.

Remarks: CRITICAL FROZEN. Separate specimens must be submitted when multiple tests are ordered. Protect from light during collection, storage, and shipment.

Unacceptable Conditions: Nonfrozen specimens.  Glass tubes.

Stability: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 4 hours; Frozen: 6 months

Reference Interval:
70-180 nmol/L

Interpretive Data:
The concentration of thiamine diphosphate (TDP), the primary active form of vitamin B1, is measured in this assay. Approximately 90% of vitamin B1 present in whole blood is TDP. Thiamine and thiamine monophosphate, which comprise the remaining 10%, are not measured.



Note:
Whole blood is the preferred specimen for thiamine assessment.  Approximately 80% of thiamine present in whole blood is found in red blood cells.
