0080310: Pyruvic Acid

Specimen Required:  
Collect: Requires special handling.  Draw whole blood either by syringe or using a Vacutainer® (pink or lavender, EDTA or green, heparin). Immediately after blood is drawn, add exactly 1 mL whole blood to a chilled pyruvate collection tube containing 2 mL 8% (w/v) perchloric acid. (Collection tubes are available through ARUP Client Services, supply # 16567).  Mix well for 30 seconds and place in an ice bath for 10 minutes. Centrifuge for 10 minutes at 1500 x g. Decant supernatant into an ARUP Standard Transport Tube and freeze.

Transport: 2 mL supernatant, frozen. (Min: 1 mL)

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 1 mL supernatant, frozen.

Remarks: Collection tubes are available through ARUP Client Services.

Unacceptable Conditions: If less than 1 mL of blood is added to collection tube, pH of the supernatant will be too low for testing to be performed.

Stability: Ambient: Unacceptable; Refrigerated: 1 month; Frozen: 6 months
