Insulin, Random : 0070107

Mnemonic: INSULIN R

Ordering Recommendation: Aids in the detection of insulinoma. Do not use to diagnose diabetes mellitus.
Methodology: Quantitative Chemiluminescent Immunoassay
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: Within 24 hours
Specimen Required: Collect: Serum separator tube. Also acceptable: Lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).

Specimen Preparation: Allow specimen to clot completely at room temperature. Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP or within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an ARUP Standard Transport Tube. (Min: 0.5 mL)

Storage/Transport Temperature: Frozen.

Unacceptable Conditions: Heparinized plasma. I.V. fluid. Vitreous fluid. Gray (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride). Hemolyzed specimens.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 month

Reference Interval:
Not established.
Interpretive Data: This test reacts on a nearly equimolar basis with the analogs insulin aspart, insulin glargine, and insulin lispro. Insulin detemir exhibits approximately 50 percent cross-reactivity. Test reactivity with insulin glulisine is negligible (< 3 percent). To convert to pmol/L, multiply µIU/mL by 6.0. The reference interval for a fasting insulin is 3-19 µIU/mL.
