Specimen Required:  
Collect: One 4 mL SST. Also acceptable: lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA).

Transport: 1 mL serum or plasma, frozen. (Min: 0.4 mL) Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.3 mL serum or plasma, frozen.

Remarks: Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature.  Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

Unacceptable Conditions: Heparinized plasma or I.V. fluid.  Specimens collected in potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride tubes.  Hemolyzed specimens.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 month

Not established.

Interpretive Data:
To convert to pmol/L, multiply µIU/mL by 6.0. The reference interval for a fasting insulin is 3-19 µlU/mL.

This assay reacts on a nearly equimolar basis with insulin aspart, insulin glargine, and insulin lispro.
