0070015: Aldosterone, Serum

Test Mnemonic: ALDOST
Methodology: Radioimmunoassay

Performed: Sun-Sat

Reported: 2-4 days

Specimen Required:
Collect: One 6 mL plastic SST.

Transport: 1 mL serum, frozen.  (Min: 0.5 mL)  Submit specimen in an ARUP Standard Transport Tube.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.5 mL serum, frozen.

Remarks: If an upright specimen is collected, patient should be upright (seated or standing) for at least two hours. Heparinized plasma is also acceptable.

Unacceptable Conditions: EDTA plasma.

Stability: After separation from cells: Ambient: 4 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 1 month

Reference Interval:

Age Posture Unspecified Supine Upright
0-6 days 5.0-102.0 ng/dL
1-3 weeks 6.0-179.0 ng/dL
1-11 months 7.0-99.0 ng/dL
1-2 years 7.0-93.0 ng/dL
3-10 years 4.0-44.0 ng/dL
11-14 years 4.0-31.0 ng/dL
15 years and older 31.0 ng/dL or less 16.0 ng/dL or less 4.0-31.0 ng/dL

Interpretive Data:
Normal serum levels of aldosterone are dependent on the sodium intake and whether the patient is upright or supine. High sodium intake will tend to suppress serum aldosterone, whereas low sodium intake will elevate serum aldosterone. The reference intervals for serum aldosterone are based on normal sodium intake.
