0065004: Cytomegalovirus Rapid Culture

Specimen Required:  
Collect: Whole blood in a 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA). Also acceptable: Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), throat swab, urine, tissue, or colon biopsy.  Indicate source of specimen.

Transport: 5 mL of whole blood at 2-8°C. (Min: 1 mL) Bronchoalveolar lavage, or urine in a sterile, leak-proof container at 2-8°C. Tissue, colon biopsy, or throat swab in viral transport media at 2-8°C.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks: Do not freeze.  

Unacceptable Conditions: Stool, rectal swab, and CSF samples.  Whole blood in Viral Transport Media.  Dry swabs, wood swabs, calcium alginate swabs, and frozen samples.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable

Reference Interval:
Culture negative for CMV by early antigen test.

Note:
Cytomegalovirus by PCR is a more sensitive method for the detection of CMV viremia and central nervous system infections, especially in the immunocompromised patient. Please refer to Cytomegalovirus by PCR, Whole Blood or Bone Marrow (0060031) for bone marrow specimens.
