Specimen Required: Patient Prep: Typing may not be requested directly on a specimen.

Collect: Herpes simplex isolate from cell culture with infected cells present.

Specimen Preparation: Transport positive cell culture or acetone fix a two-well slide with infected cells. Place each specimen in an individually sealed bag.

Storage/Transport Temperature: Refrigerated.

Remarks: Specimen source preferred.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing): Ambient: 72 hours; Refrigerated: 72 hours; Frozen: 1 month

Note: If typing is required on isolates recovered in client laboratories, the positive cell culture should be shipped on a two-well slide prepared from the infected cells and fixed in acetone.
