Influenza Virus A & B DFA with Reflex to Influenza Virus A & B Rapid Culture : 0060284

Methodology: Direct Fluorescent Antibody Stain

Reported: Within 24 hours
Specimen Required: Collect:  Nasopharyngeal aspirate/swab/washing, tracheal aspirate, or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).  Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.  Source of specimen is preferred.

Transport:  Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), nasopharyngeal washing/aspirate, or tracheal aspirate in sterile, leak-proof container or in viral transport media (ARUP supply #12884) at 2-8°C. (Min: 1 mL) Nasopharyngeal swab, in viral transport media at 2-8°C. (Min: 1 mL) Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Pediatric Collection/Transport:  

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Remarks:  Do not freeze.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Dry swabs, wood swabs, and calcium alginate swabs. Slides.

Stability:  Ambient: 1 hour; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: Unacceptable

Note: If DFA is negative or inadequate, then an influenza culture (0060286) will be added.

Sensitivity of DFA methodology is dependent upon adequacy of the specimen.  If there are fewer than 20 cells, the DFA result will be reported as "inadequate."
