Specimen Required:  
Collect: CSF, corneal scrapings or tissue, or vitreous fluid.

Transport: Sterile container (CSF or fluid). Place corneal scrapings or tissues in Page's amoeba saline. Specimen should arrive within 48-72 hours of collection at 20-25°C.  If transport is delayed, hold specimen at 37°C.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks: CRITICAL AMBIENT.

Unacceptable Conditions: Frozen, refrigerated, or formalinized specimens.  Dry material.  Nonsterile or leaking containers.

Stability: Ambient: 3 days; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable

Note:
This stain will detect Naegleria sp. and other free-living amoeba.
