#ExistCollect>
Collect: Actively growing isolated organism, in pure culture, on agar slant (identify source) and 2 mL serum or body fluid. Collect using sterile technique. A LIST OF ALL ANTIBIOTICS THAT THE PATIENT IS RECEIVING OR HAS RECEIVED IN THE PAST 48 HOURS MUST BE PROVIDED. This information is essential for performing this assay. Missing information may cause delays in turnaround time.
*ExistCollect> #ExistTransport> Transport: Organism in pure culture in a sealed container at 20-25°C and 2 mL serum or body fluid, frozen. Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines. *ExistTransport> #ExistPedCollectTransport> Pediatric Collection/Transport: Organism in pure culture in a sealed container at 20-25°C and 0.3 mL serum or body fluid, in sterile tube, frozen. Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines. *ExistPedCollectTransport> #ExistRemarks> Remarks: Send a copy of test request form with each specimen. *ExistRemarks> #ExistConditions> Unacceptable Conditions: Delayed transport of nonfrozen serum or body fluid. Nonviable organisms or mixed cultures. Inadequate information. *ExistConditions> #ExistStability> Stability: Serum: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours; Frozen: 1 week Organism: Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable *ExistStability> |

#ExistInterpData>
The data to support the use of bactericidal assays in the management of complicated bacterial infections such as endocarditis and osteomyelitis are limited. The results of this assay should be interpreted with caution.

| Note: | |
|
If more than one antibiotic is being used, the peak sample should be drawn after completion of the second antibiotic. Both peak and trough levels are usually obtained for bactericidal assay. The assay may be useful in following efficacy of treatment, particularly in patients with endocarditis or osteomyelitis. An additional handling fee will be billed for all organisms submitted that are not in pure culture as indicated in the specimen requirements. |
