Specimen Required: Collect:  Fluid from abraded lesion or body fluid. Indicate source on test request form.  Source of specimen is preferred.  Testing performed for University of Utah Health Sciences Center only. 

Transport:  Fluid from abraded lesion or body fluid in a sterile container, sterile syringe, sealed microcapillary tube, or on a moist covered slide. Specimens must arrive at ARUP within 30 minutes from collection time at 20-25°C.  Call ARUP's Bacteriology Laboratory at (801) 583-2787, ext. 2248 or 2169 to notify that specimen is being sent.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Pediatric Collection/Transport:  

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Remarks:  Avoid drying or temperature extremes. Do not use soap or antibacterial agents for cleansing lesions. Spirochetes must be motile for presumptive identification to be made.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Dry materials, delayed transport resulting in loss of motile organisms.

Stability:  Ambient: 30 minutes; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable
Reference Interval:
Negative for motile spirochetes.
