Specimen Required: Collect:  Vaginal, fecal and oral cavity specimens (mouth, gums, throat, esophagus, tongue, teeth, etc.)  Specimen source is required.

Transport:  Specimen in a sterile, leak-proof container at 2-8°C.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Pediatric Collection/Transport:  

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Remarks:  Vaginal, fecal and oral cavity specimens are routinely processed for a yeast culture, even if ordered as a fungal culture.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonsterile or leaking containers. Catheter tips.

Stability:  Ambient: 1 week; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: Unacceptable
Reference Interval:
No yeast isolated.
Identification performed on all isolates from sterile body sites.  Limited yeast identification is performed on isolates from nonsterile sites.  Further identification available by request at additional charge.

Note: Yeast identification is billed separately from culture. Identification is performed and billed by the extent of tests required for identification.
For detection of Candida species, Gardnerella vaginalis, and Trichomonas vaginalis in patients with vaginitis/vaginosis, refer to Vaginal Pathogens DNA Direct Probes (0065153).

Please notify the laboratory if Malassezia furfur is suspected.  Special media must be used for the cultivation of this yeast.
