Specimen Required: Collect: Stool.
Min
: 5 mL liquid stool in sterile container. Other intestinal source (i.e tissue) are also acceptable.


Storage/Transport Temperature: 1 g stool in a sterile container, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Remarks:  Clostridium difficile Cytotoxin Cell Assay (0060851) will be performed on all positive Clostridium difficile isolates.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonsterile or leaking containers, dry specimen, stool in PVA or formalin, delayed transport of nonrefrigerated specimen, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hours), formed stools, or rectal swabs.

Stability (collection to initiation of testing):  Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 1 week
Reference Interval:
Culture negative for Clostridium difficile.
Note: Culture for C. difficile is usually used for epidemiological purposes. Please refer to Clostridium difficile Toxins (A&B) by EIA (0065146) for routine stool screening.
