Specimen Required:  
Collect: Stool. 

Transport: 1 g stool in a sterile container, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 1 g  stool in a sterile container, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks: Clostridium difficile Toxins (A&B) by EIA (0065146) can be tested for any isolates recovered by culture upon special request. 

Unacceptable Conditions: Nonsterile or leaking containers, dry specimen, stool in PVA or formalin, delayed transport of nonrefrigerated specimen, multiple specimens (more than one in 24 hours), formed stools, or rectal swabs.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: 1 week

Reference Interval:
Culture negative for Clostridium difficile.

Note:
Culture for C. difficile is usually used for epidemiological purposes. For toxin refer to Clostridium difficile Toxins (A&B) by EIA (0065146).
Clostridium difficile
Cytotoxin Cell Assay will be performed on all positive Cultures.
