0060116: Bordetella pertussis DFA

Test Mnemonic: MS PERT

Pediatric Collection/Transport:

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks: Culture, in addition to DFA, is suggested. If both culture and DFA are ordered, two swabs or swab plus slides are required.  Preferred source is nasopharyngeal swab or washings/aspirates. Refer to test code 0060117 for culture instructions.

Unacceptable Conditions: Improper labeling of slide for DFA (slide, NOT slide container, must be labeled with patient name and identifying number), dry swabs.  Sputum.

Stability: Ambient: 3 days; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: (slides) 1 month

Reference Interval:
Negative for Bordetella pertussis.

Interpretive Data:
A negative DFA does not exclude the possibility of Bordetella pertussis infection.

DFA is not recommended for diagnosing Bordetella infections. If clinically indicated, please submit additional specimen for culture or nucleic acid amplification testing.

Note:
An amplified DNA test (PCR) is also available for respiratory specimens. Refer to Bordetella pertussis/parapertussis by PCR (0065080). Bordetella pertussis Culture (0060117) is also available.
