Specimen Required:  
Collect: Any site or fluid.  Source of specimen is required.  (Detection by amplified nucleic acid methodology can be performed on genital specimens received in test-specific transport media.) 

Transport: Inoculated Modified Thayer Martin agar sealed in plastic bag with CO2 generating tablet. Swab in Amies with charcoal.  Sterile container (fluids only). Send immediately to ARUP at 20-25°C. Incubate at 35°C if delay occurs.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport:

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Remarks: Refer to the Infectious Disease Specimen section in the front of this User's Guide for special specimen collection instructions. Submit slide for Gram stain on male urethra specimens. Do not refrigerate specimen.

Unacceptable Conditions: Delayed transport of dry swabs, delayed transport in non-CO2 environment, nonsterile or leaking containers, refrigerated, or frozen specimens.

Stability: Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable

Reference Interval:
Culture negative for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
