Methodology: Standard reference procedures for bacterial stain, aerobic culture, and identification. Anaerobe culture performed on properly collected specimens
Performed: Sun-Sat
Reported: 1-5 days
Preliminary: Negative at 1 day; Final: Negative at 5 days
Positive cultures are reported as soon as detected.
Specimen Required: Collect:  Aspirate of peritoneal, thoracentesis, synovial, pericardial, amniotic, or culdocentesis fluid.  Source of specimen is required.

Transport:  Sterile-capped syringe (needle removed), sterile tube, or anaerobe gel transport tube. Send immediately to ARUP at 20-25°C.  Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Pediatric Collection/Transport:  

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.


Remarks:  Client will be notified of positive stain/culture. Only peritoneal fluid collected in an aerobic blood culture bottle is acceptable, if accompanied by a sample of the original fluid.  Anaerobe Culture (includes Gram Stain 0060101) (0060143) is also performed on properly collected and transported specimens.

Unacceptable Conditions:  Nonsterile or leaking containers.  Specimens other than peritoneal fluid submitted in blood culture bottles or IsolatorTM tubes.  Specimens submitted in anticoagulant other than SPS.  Syringes with needle attached.

Stability:  Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable
Reference Interval:
No growth. 
Identification and susceptibility performed on positive cultures.
Note: Anaerobe culture, Gram stain, identification, and susceptibility tests are billed separately from culture.
