0060071: Herpesvirus 6 (HHV6) (A&B), Quantitative PCR

Test Mnemonic: HHV6PCR
Methodology: Polymerase Chain Reaction

Performed: Mon, Wed, Fri

Reported: 2-7 days

Specimen Required:
Collect: CSF or one 5 mL lavender (EDTA) or pink (K2EDTA). Spin blood sample, remove plasma and freeze before transporting.  Specimen source is required.

Transport: 1 mL CSF or plasma in a sterile container, frozen.

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Pediatric Collection/Transport: 0.25 mL CSF or plasma in a sterile container, frozen.  (Less volume may decrease sensitivity of assay.)

Submit specimen according to Biological Substance, Category B, shipping guidelines.

Unacceptable Conditions: Heparinized or hemolyzed samples.

Stability: Ambient: 8 hours; Refrigerated: 3 days; Frozen: 3 months

Reference Interval:
Not detected

Interpretive Data:
The quantitative range of this assay is 3.0-6.0 log copies/mL (1,000-999,000 copies/mL)

A negative result (less than 3.0 log copies/mL or less than 1,000 copies/mL) does not rule out the presence of PCR inhibitors in the patient specimen or HHV6 DNA in concentrations below the level of detection of the assay.  Inhibition may also lead to underestimation of viral quantitation.

No international standard is currently available for calibration of this assay. Caution should be taken when interpreting results generated by different methodologies.

This test is performed pursuant to an agreement with Roche Molecular Systems, Inc.

Please refer to Statement A in the Compliance Statements section in the front of the Laboratory Test Directory.

Note:
This assay detects and quantitates HHV6 subtypes A and B.
